Two months ago, I modeled for capturingemotions.co.uk again, a great experience as usual.
This time, we went to the Barbican Estate in London. There will be another post after this one from the same location, focusing on one of these outfits.
The name Barbican comes from the latin word Barbacana, which was a fortified outpost.
You can find a few interesting medieval examples in Warsaw and Krakow, but here in London, it was a Roman watchtower.
While you can still see some remnants of the Roman London Wall, this area called Cripplegate was destroyed during WWII.
The Barbican Estate, built in the 1960s and 1980s, is Grade II listed, and you can understand it when you walk inside.
It’s what I called Brutalist architecture done well and it has a lot of amazing features like lakes, endless perspectives, satisfying volumes and a cultural centre.

Ben Aaronovitch, the author of the amazing Peter Grant series – if you like urban fantasy you should give it a try – calls the Barbican a “brutalist complex that is needlessly labyrinthine even by 1970s standards” but I disagree – or more accurately, I guess it’s part of the appeal for me. It’s actually easier to navigate than you might imagine and lets your find new places or perspective each time, new pockets of the city.
It’s a great backdrop for photo sessions as you can really play with the features.
